Ace Gallery Los Angeles is pleased to present Vertical, an exhibition of recent works by Los Angeles-based artist Deborah Salt. This is Salt’s inaugural exhibition with the gallery.
Deborah Salt’s angled paintings, both colorfully bright and minimal, bring forward literal characteristics of the canvas and expand definitions of painting. She has arrived at this engaging body of work through a distillation of artistic concerns over decades.
Salt’s paintings hang at a slant, an alignment the artist refers to as “tip-to-toe,” establishing the vertical axis from upper left to lower right. The absence of a right-angle paradigm gives an off kilter effect further enhanced by long, narrow proportions.
The surfaces of Salt’s canvases are painted a flat white, in contrast to the sides which bear twelve to twenty layers of a single hue—blue, red, yellow, pink. These vivid edges delineate the field of the painting and reflect a soft chromatic glow on adjacent walls. Thus Salt’s paintings define fields within and beyond the boundaries of the canvas.
The combination of these effects engages us dynamically as viewers. Only by tilting, shifting and sidestepping do we encounter the fullness of the work and its spatial influence. Installed in groups, the paintings interact as their surrounding spaces interlock and reverberate with halations of color.
Minimal and playful, hard and soft, Salt’s geometric abstraction presents a rich and subtle painting experience.
