Pastine’s work emphasizes the event of the viewer’s encounter with the painting by means of seamless color gradients, composed of nuanced admixtures of complementary hues. Entirely through chromatic relations, Pastine’s surfaces appear to pulse toward their edges, generating the effect of a literal sense of movement that contravenes the temporally static condition of a still image.
Born in New York City in 1964, Pastine studied at Cooper Union (BFA), the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Hunter College (MFA,1993). Her work has been exhibited widely in the United States and Japan, and is included in many public and corporate collections. Her public comission, Limitless, is installed in the adjoining lobbies of the Ernst & Young Plaza in Los Angeles. She currently lives and works in Southern California.
